Dare to believe.
Scripture reading (Psalm 34:8-9)
“Oh taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Oh, fear the Lord, you, His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. “
Beloved, our God is a good God who can be trusted! He is a God who has never and will never disappoint those who dare to follow Him. Many of us have a longing for God and the things of God. We are able to attest to His Presence in our lives, to His authority and sovereignty. From the wonderful creation all around us, we are able to ascertain that there is indeed a God who sits above on His throne watching over the affairs of men.
We may even have had the opportunity to come to understand the saving Grace of Jesus. We yearn to commune and take this journey with Him, but are often impeded because our mindsets, fears and idols have a way of preventing us from taking that bold step to follow Him.
This walk of faith God is calling us to is one that will require boldness and courage, to dare to believe His promises and purposes for our lives. There is a picture I once saw online of a little girl refusing to hand over her doll to Jesus because it was so precious to her. Unbeknownst to her, Jesus had behind Him, a teddy bear which was much bigger than the one she was to let go of. I believe, this is a pictorial view of the call of God. We often hold on to our beliefs, treasures, idols, refusing to let them go and trust God because we are unaware of all that is in store for us. The walk of faith demands that we are bold enough to taste and see. That like our father Abraham, we leave behind our idols, mindsets, and ways; separating ourselves from the known to follow God on an adventure to the promised land.
We cannot know or fully experience God if we are standing at the shore, wishing to know all there is to know before we believe. Spurgeon puts it this way ‘for every one that actually crosses over into the Promised Land, there are many who stand for a while and look longingly across the river and then turn sadly back to the comparative safety of the sandy wastes of the old life’. We must be bold and courageous to leave what we have held on to in our past and dare to believe because He is God.
The Psalmist encourages us to take advantage of the opportunity before us to taste and see that the Lord is good. Much like Joseph, God often doesn’t tell you the entire story or full picture of the adventure He wants to embark with you. It is a journey in which you will never be forsaken (Psalm 37:25). He is a good God. In as much as He is God all by Himself, He willingly offers us the opportunity to let go of the trajectory of our lives and hold on to His. The Bible boldly declares that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Heb 11:6)
As you step out today, take a leap of faith in your heart and be determined to feed on the faithfulness of God, on His goodness. Be determined to dare to believe His word, regardless of what your circumstances, society or mindsets dictates. Let us be encouraged that we are on the right path. Taste and see that the Lord is Good. Indeed, He is good!!
