Pretty Girl
The thing about mirrors is they don’t lie
Reflecting the very essence of what, before them, lies.
Mirrors … don’t mirror lies.
When strangers meet me for the first time,
I know I’m pretty by the look in their eyes.
Some stare long enough for me to notice
While others let it slip off their tongues
‘You’re so beautiful!’ they say.
and it never ceases to make me smile.
Glad, because if a stranger who has never seen
who I really am, calls me pretty.
It must be true.
Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder
And these are my beholders. They speak only truth
See the thing about mirrors is they don’t lie
Reflecting the very essence of what, before them, lies
Mirrors … don’t mirror lies
Except … mine does.
Heart crumbling at the site of my image
The acne and scars magnified into this form _ ugly
Who would want to associate this with pretty?
Scars beyond my skin and tears kissing my beautiful eyes
My life has been everything but pretty and this mirror sees it clearly
So what did the strangers see?
How can I get to behold that beauty?
Pretty girl sitting in your room,
What is beauty to you?
When does it embrace you most?
Pretty girl on the gram,
Beneath the filters and captions
Will I find a bleeding heart?
Pretty girl in front of the mirror,
Why have you refused to admit the truth?
That God created and pronounced you good.
That your beauty is like a petal
To lure bees, both Jew and Gentile.
To be pretty is not to be free
But to catch the eyes of humanity
to the creative hand of a King.
To be pretty is not to be free
But a responsibility. A burden of emanating God’s glory
Like the sound of rustling leaves, your skin must scream to the heavens
“I am the daughter of a King.
So take a look at me and worship Him. “
Dear pretty girl in her teens,
Your beauty is for a purpose
No wonder it comes in different shades of height, shape and skin.
Don’t get caught up in the web of lies
Telling you to be filtered is to be nice.
Don’t hang on to trends and compliments
Carrying you to undefiled beds which scar you in deep places
Let the owner of your skin renew you from within
Eyes that captivate, heart of warmth,
A gentle and a quiet spirit
That is beauty to be praised.
Dear pretty girl reading this,
Stick to God’s idea of beauty
Don’t die on the inside trying to paint only the outside pretty
For beauty is on both sides
It’s over fifty shades skin deep.
